Experimental Investigation on the Characteristics of Pitch Motion for a Novel SPAR–type FOWT in Regular Waves

Pitching mode is more crucial than heaving in assessing floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) motion characteristics, especially the operation of SPAR substructure. The aim this paper to develop an experimental method for improving substructure minimize unnecessary pitch motion. Toward end, three vertical plate configurations based on novel are being developed, known as 3VP, 4VP, and 5VP models. In consideration 0⁰, 30⁰, 60⁰, 90⁰-incidence, response characteristics proposed models comprehensively evaluated terms submerged volume ratio, wave-induced motion, non-dimensional damping coefficient, percentage reduction. model test results indicate that 4VP outperforms other with respect dynamic response, particularly incidence 0⁰ 90⁰. This study implies development both feasible effective modification SPAR-type FOWT substructures.
